SUNSET PARK — FAMILIES ON TIGHT BUDGETS will be given backpacks and other school supplies next week, when Family Health Centers at NYU Langone Hospital host their annual back-to-school resource fair in time for the Thursday, Sept. 5, start of the NYC Public School academic year. The resource fair, taking place Wednesday, Aug. 28, will offer health screenings, information, special entertainment for kids, demonstrations, and an adult activity area. Knowing that lengthy school supply lists can be a financial burden on already tight budgets for many families across the City, NYU Langone’s Resource Fair is geared to help families in Sunset Park and surrounding neighborhoods. Backpacks and school supplies will be distributed at the resource fair, taking place at Martin Luther Playground in Sunset Park, Second Avenue and 55th Street. City Councilmember Alexa Avilés, whose district stretches from Red Hook to Bath Beach, is expected to participate.

Martin Luther Playground is named for the 15th/16th century religious reformer from whom the Lutheran Church sprung. The Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn was founded originally in 1883, on William St. in Red Hook,  before moving to 4520 Fourth Avenue and then to its present address. NYU Langone took over the hospital in 2016.
